Word of the Day – Rate of Reinforcement

Rate of Reinforcement: The frequency with which the dog is rewarded. The rate of reinforcement can be determined by counting how many reinforcers a dog is given in 60 seconds and dividing 60 by the number of reinforcers given. If the dog is given three treats in 60 seconds, the rate of reinforcement is one every 20 seconds. Dogs who are new to training should be kept at a higher rate of reinforcement (something close to 10 treats per minute) to keep them interested in the training.
